Product sourcing and management from Business Pluspoint

In 1996, Gillian Steedman joined The Leprosy Mission’s mail order trading division, TLM Trading Limited, as their marketing and merchandising manager to look after the mail order catalogue.

From a humble 16-page insert in the Mission’s quarterly supporters’ magazine containing a few books and souvenirs, the catalogue rapidly grew into a 64-page publication presenting a wide range of books, cards, gifts, toys and household objects; later, the catalogue also featured hand-made products sourced directly from leprosy-affected craftspeople. In her 8 years at TLM Trading, Gillian managed the production of bespoke diaries, calendars, Christmas and other greetings cards, pens, pencils and tea towels, as well as commissioning artwork for children’s books.

► Product Sourcing, Management and Copy Writing

At TLM Trading, Gillian was also responsible for the purchase of hundreds of off-the-shelf products, building and developing excellent relationships with dozens of suppliers.

Whilst at TLM Trading, and later with Party Pieces, Gillian developed stock management and planning systems using a variety of databases and mail order systems.

Purchasing and stock control

Gillian has written copy for hundreds of products with variations for catalogue and website use and is the editor and designer of a monthly community magazine. She puts her sharp eye, attention to detail and excellent grammar to use on a regular basis, checking product copy and editorial from dozens of different writers with different writing styles.
